Traditional Conversion
One of the most frequent questions clients and prospective clients ask is – how do I convert traditional training to online training with a reasonable budget?
Whether the business objective at hand is to streamline the onboarding process for HR, document the completion of mandatory compliance training, track classroom training or update legacy SCORMS – below are some tricks of the trade from our headquarters to yours:
Breakout the whiteboard
For many organizations bringing all onboarding or traditional training online can be a daunting process. We recommend first addressing the business problem at hand and exploring how it can be solved with a digital solution. For many of our clients the initial need relates to increased visibility into training and/or documentation completion – which can often be remedied with the reporting capabilities in the LMS. Often clients need to track compliance training in order to maintain certification. Other times clients simply want to streamline the onboarding process for new hires and eliminate paperwork.
Leverage the tools built-in to your LMS
At the most basic level content must simply be uploaded! Your LMS is likely to have various options for uploading documents and other job aids for learner consumption. V6 features a Content Library for this very reason – clients are using this feature to disseminate compliance documentation, critical sales information, job aids related to brand reinforcement and more. Additionally, there are options for requiring learners to confirm acknowledgement and receipt of documentation – which can then be tracked and reported on through the LMS.
Choose content developers carefully
Many organizations do not have robust learning and delivery teams, so often learning leaders contract instructional design companies to update and restructure content or redevelop legacy SCORMS. This can become an expensive and frustrating process. We recommend considering the following:
- Rely on referrals when selecting a vendor. At VenU we’ve worked with a variety of content providers over the last 15 years, and are always happy to provide clients with recommendations.
- Learn your LMS’s requirements and capabilities. In some instances, learning objectives can be met without extensive redevelopment of content by simply leveraging the content creation tools within the LMS. If you do find yourself working with a vendor to redevelop SCORMS or other eLearning modules, it’s a good idea to confirm LMS requirements related to versions supported by the LMS and otherwise.
- Bridge the vendor gap. Your LMS provider of choice should be more than happy to work with your chosen content provider to ensure any new learning materials you have created or redeveloped are seamlessly integrated into the LMS. Consider a quick virtual meeting to ensure communication between the two.
